Enter Eris

Isabel’s photo of a rare mule driver. We used to see a lot more scenes like this just a few years ago. Now just cars and cars and cars.

Mild symptoms say the doctors for this year’s variant of Covid. There are scattered reports of people in Greece and elsewhere in the world coming down with mild flu-like symptoms. The medical professionals (epidemiologists) in Greece, in their naming things mania, have given the virus the unusually “heavy” name of Eris, after the goddess of strife and discord (and sister to Nemesis, Hybrus and others).

I’m not sure what they are calling this variant in other countries but thankfully here in Greece they opted for a namesake from their mythological past, as always. The ancients personified everything in their world from love to war to strife and on and on. So when the moderns decide to name a storm or a heatwave or a virus, they reach into their vast treasury of descriptive names thousands of years old . Then we can look up the names and be reminded which god did what. See Eris at wikipedia.

BTW. face masks never went out of fashion at the health centers and doctors offices.

I wrote about Nemesis a few years ago here… https://skopelosarts.wordpress.com/2020/10/04/nemesis-part-ii/
