Surprising everyone except the people who operate the EKO filling station up the Stafilos road, the “Captain Christos” nautical transporter slid into Skopelos harbor late yesterday afternoon. It is not really a big ship but impressed the eye anyway with its sleek lines and brand new paint job.
According to the small crowd of gawkers collected at the unloading ramp, the ship in its current form is meant only to carry rubber-tired petrol haulers. Yesterday the ship was empty save one lonely fuel tank truck and its trailer. The economics of such a venture is not clear as for years the local EKO franchise has been serviced by the EKO 1 tanker ship with the ability to offload fuel via its own on-board tanker truck. There are four EKO filling stations in the Northern Sporades, two in Skiathos, one here, and another in Alonissos
