Promises, promises (Ferries, ferries)

More ferry boat news…or non-news. Taxydromos newspaper (link) reports today that the Aqua Jewel of Alpha Ferries will launch service Volos/Sporades about mid-March. OK, good. I detect two obvious problems.

First, the press release uses the troublingly vague phrase ‘about mid-March’ (Περί τα μέσα Μαρτίου). Could they be more exact?

Second, ‘about mid-March’ is 4 weeks after the Proteus is scheduled to quit the route for its annual 2 month tune-up.

Will the Ministry of Shipping and Island Policy allow or force Proteus to postpone its annual refitting to accommodate the void? At their on-line pre-booking and ticketing site(link), ANES doesn’t show any voyages after February 13. If Proteus’s seaworthiness term is extended until the Aqua Jewel comes on-line and then takes its two month holiday, the ship would miss out on the busy Holy Week/Easter (April 9 – 16) traffic (especially the Mantoudi/Sporades route).

In the meantime, Hellenic Seaways should be firing up Express Skiathos (or something else) around about that time.

We’ll just have to wait and see.

  1. By the way – Mirtidiotissa left Skopelos at 01:30 last night for Skaithos and Agios Konstantinos. It arrived safely at Agios Konstantinos at 06:00 +/- .
