This photo of a mantis was taken the other day in warm bright sunshine. Though not visible in the picture, this mantis mom was lugging a load of eggs in her swollen abdomen. You may see others as early autumn continues, searching for the right surface on which to squeeze its foamy egg mass. The sticky cast off mass can attach to practically anything (plant stems, structures) and then harden into a semi-impervious shell. If luck is good, it should sit undisturbed until hatching time.
As with many personal observations, scenes such as these bring to (my) mind lyrics to songs. In this (egg) case the soundtrack is “When I Lay My Burden Down”. Here is a link to bluesman Furry Lewis’s version of the song.
