Dry landscape or “Don’t play with matches”

Dry Grass
A look across the landscape shows clearly how dry the island has become in the last month. Up and down the hillsides olive, plum and almond trees are framed by the yellow of dried out grass. Very dried out grass.

Luckily there do not appear to be any strong winds forecast for the next few days which offsets somewhat a risk of wildfire.

However, for the next 4 to 5 weeks, there will be a whole lot more visitors on the island “doing their thing”. The sheer numbers increase the possibility of someone, somewhere, forgetting to extinguish a cigarette or being careless with the barbecue.

BTW – the imperative “Don’t play with matches” is a little outdated and might mean nothing to the younger generation – as in “what’s a match?”
